Delta Heavy Machinery: nearly two decades of ERP and website

Van Kessel IT has been building Delta Heavy Machinery's ERP since 2007. It started as a Java desktop application for purchasing, sales, inventory, transport and the workshop; it has since been extended with marketing, a financial integration and a fully integrated website. The system is now being rebuilt step by step into a web application on Wercbanc.

The challenge

In 2007, Delta Heavy Machinery asked us to build a single system that brings the entire heavy machinery trade together: purchasing, sales, inventory, transport and the workshop. The existing solutions on the market fit poorly with the specific processes around large, unique machines, each with its own origin, inspection history and overhaul track.

What we built

We started with a Java desktop application that supports the five core processes:

  • Purchasing: registering, assessing and converting offers into purchases.

  • Sales: quotes, orders and invoicing from the same stock.

  • Inventory: a complete file per machine, from arrival to delivery.

  • Transport: worldwide insight into all machine locations and movements.

  • Workshop: inspections, parts, overhauls and maintenance hours recorded per machine.

In the years after, the system was extended step by step:

  • Marketing modules to bring offers to the attention of the right buyers.

  • An integration with the financial system for bookings and invoicing.

  • Integration with the company’s own website, so stock and machine data come from one source.

  • Integration with external websites for buying and selling machines.

The website

Delta Heavy Machinery’s website (deltaheavymachinery.com) was also built by Van Kessel IT, with three principles: findable, fast and fully integrated. Visitors see what is in stock right now, including the data recorded in the workshop during inspection. No separate product database, no double entry; the website is a window onto the same ERP that is used internally.

From desktop to web

The system is now being rebuilt step by step into a web application on Wercbanc, our own framework. Not as a big replacement project, but part by part, while the existing system keeps running.

What the system itself does is on wercstat.com: The system: Wercstat ERP.

Partnership

Delta illustrates what we mean by partnership: nearly two decades of building, extending and modernising software together, without ever starting a big replacement project. The system grew along, and keeps growing.
